A major exhibition in the Basilica Palladiana
From 13 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza hosts the exhibition “Italia Germania. Painting and Sculpture between the 19th and 20th Centuries. From Canova to Kiefer”, the first chapter of Ispirazione Europa, a new cycle of major international exhibitions that will continue with Italy France in 2027 and Italy Spain in 2028.
Two centuries of dialogue between Italy and Germany
The exhibition tells the story of journeys, encounters and mutual influences between Italian and German artists, intellectuals and architects: from Goethe’s journey to Italy and the Nazarene community in Rome, to the dialogue between Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen, through to the Secessions and the visionary work of Giorgio de Chirico and Arnold Böcklin.
The journey continues with the 20th-century avant-gardes – Futurists and Expressionists, Magic Realism and Neue Sachlichkeit, Bauhaus and abstraction – and reaches the post-war years, the Transavanguardia and the Neue Wilde, all the way to Anselm Kiefer and the new generations of artists.
The artists on display
Featured artists include Antonio Canova, Friedrich Overbeck, Giorgio de Chirico, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Emil Nolde, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Felice Casorati, Wassily Kandinsky, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Mimmo Paladino, Anselm Kiefer and many more.
The exhibition is curated by Gabriella Belli and Valerio Terraroli, with the special collaboration of Mart – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, and is part of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Italy and Germany.
